Is PDFree really free?
Yes. Every tool is free to use with no accounts, trials, or feature limits. The site is supported by the ads you see on this page.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. PDFs are opened and edited entirely in your browser using JavaScript (PDF.js and pdf-lib). Your documents never leave your device. The current file is kept in your browser's own storage so the editor can reload it, and it's cleared when you return to this page from the editor or open another file.
How do I redact a PDF without uploading it?
Open the PDF, choose the redaction tool, and draw a black bar or white-out box over anything you want gone. When you save, redacted pages are flattened to an image, so the hidden text is removed from the file and cannot be recovered. It all happens in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.
Is it safe to edit confidential or sensitive documents?
Yes. Because every edit happens on your own device and nothing is uploaded, contracts, tax forms, medical records, and legal paperwork stay yours alone. The ads on the page never see your files.
What can I do with the editor?
Draw, highlight, add text, insert images, sign, fill forms with text fields and checkboxes, stamp, watermark, redact, run OCR on scanned pages, measure distances and areas, and reorder pages before saving a new PDF. You can also select the document's own text to copy, highlight, or black it out.

Can I verify that nothing is uploaded?
Yes, and you do not have to take our word for it. Load the editor, disconnect from the internet, and keep working: everything still opens, edits, and saves. You can also open your browser's developer tools, watch the Network tab, and confirm your PDF is never sent anywhere.
